Friday Faves – July 5, 2013

Hey everyone! It’s Friday! So what things am I going to share with you today? Well, first off, let me say, I’m late writing this post today because I was busy playing with my littlest bug! The kids are visiting with family for most of the next few days but my little guy is too small to play in the ocean so he’s back home for awhile today. My point is that I usually don’t have a great deal of free time but when I do, I enjoy scrapbooking (I’m pretty sure that’s not a surprise to any of you by this point). With so little time and such a passion for scrapbooking, what does one use to capture and record all those wonderful memories?

I bet you know where I’m going with this! Yes, Project Life and all the other pocket page style scrapbook products out there! As you know, I also love to work both digitally and physically with paper, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone when I tell you that I have almost all of the “official” Project Life kits digitally and five (yes, FIVE) paper Project Life core kits! Why? Well, partly because I love the designs and I have a scrapbook hoarder personality! Mostly though it’s because I love the idea that if I’m pressed for time, I can drop my photos, a few cards and a little writing onto a page and it looks wonderful! Sometimes just doing that looks better then when I keep playing around with a page for days!

I really love that this way of scrapbooking has taken off. With any great idea you run into true copy cats but I think that many designers (both paper and digital) have really expanded on this concept and given us so many options! I’ve also got some SN@P products in my paper stash, I have other designers’ P365/Journal Card products in my digital files, and I’m excited to use it all! So today’s post is all about how much I love these products! Did you get through all that text? Okay, lets look at some fun pictures!

Here is a picture of my current “official” Project Life stash:

Albums, pocket pages and Project Life Core Kits
How I store my Project Life Kits

And there’s a picture of some of my SN@P products, these are for my oldest son’s Disney album that I hope to work on with him this summer:

SN@P! album and products

Lastly, here are some of my favorite digital products I like to use with my Project Life albums, I’m not including all of the “official” Project Life kits (which you can find at AC Digitals) because I really want to share some of the OTHER great products I use to supplement my “official” stash:

I’m pretty sure you knew I’d include M&M Designs’ Project Life Journal Card line! Since I’m on her Creative Team, I’m lucky enough to get to work with these great templates, this one was just released today! Take a look at the layout on the top right, that’s the one I made using this template and Inspiredbydominic’s “A New Day” kit and Corky V1 styles:

Project Life V7 by M&M Designs

Another product that I love, and a designer who’s team I’m not on, is Scrapping with Liz’s “Time Table Templates”. They are set up to record “Day in the Life” layouts but are flexible enough to be used for weekly layouts too:

Time Table Templates by Scrapping with Liz

I also love how some designers are creating 4″x6″ templates. It’s nice to have a template for one of my pictures pockets especially if I want to add multiple pictures to that spot. Scrapping with Liz also has some 4″x6″ templates but the ones I just saw from ChrissyW Digital (who’s team I’m also on) really gets me excited!

Something to Brag About – 4″x6″ Template by ChrissyW Digital

So, in honor of today’s Friday Fave, I’m going to enjoy my day, and most likely the weekend, working on my Project Life pages! I’ll make sure to share them with you all next week! Enjoy your weekend dear readers and as always…

TSGT Saturday – June 29, 2013

Welcome back to “This Scrapper’s Got Talent Saturday”! This week’s challenge was to use everything in the provided mini-kit, and only the mini-kit, to create a layout that included plenty of white space. To me, that’s a double challenge! Well you know what? Challenge accepted! Here’s what the mini kit looks like (it includes 4 papers and 8 elements):

Gone Fishing Mini by Crescent Moon Designs

Now, I don’t fish, my kids don’t fish, no one that I know fishes. What does one do in this situation? Use pictures of geese, ducks and a body of water obviously! Hey, they both have water themes, if you read last weeks post, you know I tend to wander close to the lines of rules. It should be no surprise then that I didn’t even attempt to incorporate fishing pictures! Without further ado, here is my layout:

“Duck Pond”
Template: Sample Pack 30 by ChrissyW Digital
Kit: Gone Fishing TSGT Mini by Crescent Moon Designs

I think I created a successful layout this week! There are eliminations this week so I’ll admit I’m a bit nervous. The other wonderful ladies I’m competing against created fantastic layouts too! All of the “This Scrapper’s Got Talent” layouts can be found at Stuff To Scrap’s Gallery page so go take a look! Hope you enjoyed today’s post and as always…

Template Tuesday – June 25, 2013

Welcome to “Template Tuesday” and the post that almost didn’t happen! You see, Photoshop Elements 11 and I had a little disagreement last night, it decided that the halftone filter wasn’t going to work properly anymore… after working just fine since the install. Why you ask? I have no idea… This put a kink into my plans for “Template Tuesday”. I’d planned to show you how to halftone pictures to use in superhero themed layouts like the one from yesterday’s post. I started out with this template (for Jessica Sprague’s 7 Days in June Challenges. Unfortunately, the links for this challenge are only good for one day so head over there and pick up today’s freebie and join the challenge!):

I rotated the template (this seems to be a new trend for me…), added my papers, pictures and elements to come up with this layout:

“My Hero”Template: iToons by Liv.e Designs
Kit: Super Kid by Inspiredbydominic Designs (Releases 6/27/13)

You can’t see it very well, but I used a halftone overlay on the pictures. I don’t think these photos show the effect as nicely as the ones in yesterday’s layout. Thanks Photoshop Elements, thanks. In yesterday’s layout, I used the halftone filter (Filter-> Sketch-> Halftone pattern). This layout I copied all of my photos into a grayscale page (Mode-> Grayscale) to use the halftone pattern (does anyone know why I can’t apply the pattern anymore to a color photo?!). This morning, I really was grumpy because I DID NOT like how these photos turned out. Guess where I went… if you said Google you win! Google was only so helpful. I found many techniques for halftoning in Photoshop but information on Photoshop Elements was pretty limited. What I did find was this great gem on Draconianrain’s Blog, of how to halftone a drawing, that helped me notice I had another filter option! The Halftone color! (Filter-> Pixelate-> Color Halftone) It gave me a better overlay to work with but I will have to play around with the settings some more! Do you want to see how I did it with a picture? Here you go, just click a picture to make it bigger if you can’t see all the details:

Step 1: Duplicate layer. I always, always try to remember to do this as it’s a lot easier to scrap edits and start over!

Duplicate layer

Step 2: Filter-> Pixelate-> Color Halftone

Filter-> Pixelate-> Color Halftone

Step 3: Change your settings. I used the settings pictured. The smaller the number, the smaller the “dots”.

Change settings
Color Halftone close up

Step 4: Opacity and blending mode options. I ended up duplicating my background again and setting the blend mode to Soft light to up the contrast:

Soft Light blend mode for middle layer

The top layer that has the Color Halftone filter is set to Overlay blend mode:

Halftone layer set to Overlay

And you know what? While looking at this picture I realized why I was having issues with my half tone pattern. Do you see the two black boxes on the bottom left? They are the foreground and background color. They shouldn’t both be black if I want to see a pattern! Sigh, at least I figured out what I was doing wrong, and I found another way to create a halftone look! So, if you want to do it the easy way… follow above steps until you get to choosing Color Halftone filter. Use Filter-> Sketch-> Halftone Pattern

Filter-> Sketch-> Halftone Pattern settings (Size 3, Contrast 30)

Take a look at those little boxes on the bottom left… One’s now black (the colors the dots will be) and the other one is white (what the background color will be). I then set the top (Halftone Pattern layer) to Overlay blend mode. I duplicated the background layer again and set it to Screen blend and 50% opacity.

Middle layer Screen blend, 50% Opacity

Is anyone still with me? Well that’s three ways to create a halftone effect on your pictures (or on anything really!)… I hope your eyes didn’t glaze over too much! If you have any questions, leave me a comment or as I said, if there’s anything you are interested in “seeing how it’s done” I’ll do my best to lay out a how-to on a “Template Tuesday” for you! As always…

Miscellaneous Monday – June 24, 2013

Welcome to Miscellaneous Monday! Now, re-read that in your best announcers voice… makes a great introduction right? I’m sharing one of the funnest scrapbook kits I’ve seen recently! It was made by one of the fabulous designers I create for and the only people who have seen this kit so far is our team. You, lovely reader, get to see what’s in it before anyone else! Also, I get to share a new template release by another one of my designers! Have you noticed all the exclamation marks? I’m really excited to share today’s layout with you! Okay, before I burst, let’s get to it!

First, there is a new template releasing from M&M Designs at her Gotta Pixel Store. Today’s release is another pocket page style template “Project Life Journal Card V6“. As always, you can check out her gallery at Gotta Pixel or on Facebook for inspiration!

Guess who got their Dear Lizzy Project Life mini kit this weekend! That’s right folks, I did! I love all the soft, pastel colors but I have no idea what to use it for… I put cards into the mini album though. Look for pictures on Project Life Wednesday! Here’s a look at the promotional picture from Becky Higgins’ blog:

Lastly, don’t forget tomorrow is Template Tuesday! If anyone has any question or requests (on anything paper or digital scrapbook related, not just about templates) that I might be able to help with, leave me a comment and I will work them into my Tuesday posts!

I think that about wraps up Miscellaneous Monday for this week! As always…

Friday Faves- June 21, 2013

It’s nice to see everyone here today! I’m glad your back for “Friday Faves”, today I’m sharing some of my favorite designers! Now, I’ve tried to make sure it’s not a secret that I’m on Creative Teams for some wonderful designers. Obviously I love their products, but today I’m purposely NOT including them in my Friday Faves list! What I am trying to include are designers of different styles and products that might interest you. I don’t get any kind of compensation from any of the designers I’m listing today and these opinions are completely mine! So, if you’re ready, let jump on in!

I have so many favorite designers so it was difficult to narrow it down to just a few designers! In no particular order, here are some of my favorite designers:

Bella Gypsy:
I love their kits so much, the quality is spot on which is incredibly important to me. When I scrap, I normally use more “realistic” elements. I started scrapping in paper so my tastes typically run along those lines. The other thing that I really enjoy about Bella Gypsy is their wide variety of kit themes! Need a summer kit? They have one:

Hello Summer Collection by Bella Gypsy

Need a kit to scrap the men in your life? They’ve got that too!

Glad You’re My Dad Collection by Bella Gypsy

Love the “You Only Live Once” idea? They have a kit for that!

YOLO Bundle

Can you believe these kits? I love how they create elements for “traditional” scrap pages as well as journal cards for those of us who scrap in the pocket page style! Awesome!

Sahlin Studio:
Now, Sahlin Studio creates wonderful digital kits, the quality is great and the variety is amazing but, can I tell you how much I love their “Project Mouse” line of products?! My family loves visiting Disney World and “Project Mouse” is all about Disney and every aspect of your trip! Take a look at some of the “Project Mouse” kits:

Project Mouse Bundle no. 1
Project Mouse Bundle no. 3
Project Mouse (Princess Edition) Bundle

Can you believe the variety? That’s only three of the many bundles they have! If you have any Disney pictures at all, THESE are the kits you want to use! I just can’t tell you how much I love these products!

Scrapping with Liz:
Scrapping with Liz makes some of my favorite templates! Her templates have clean lines, and appealing layouts. There are pocket page/week in review style as well as more “traditional” style templates. When I look at one of her templates I smile because I know that regardless of the kit I choose to use, my layout will end up looking fantastic! Here are a few of the different styles of templates she creates:

Artsy Journal Templates 2
Great Fortune Awaits – The Templates
Weekly Project Templates 7
More Doubles – Templates

Do you see a pattern to my choices yet? Great quality and flexible kits/templates! Scrapping with Liz embodies those traits! You will probably see me use her templates many, many times with my layouts!

Mommyish:
I think you can tell by now why I would love this designer (hint: quality and variety!) but guess what this designer also creates? Commercial Use (CU) products! That’s the type of things you buy to use in making your own kits! Take a look at her Personal Use (PU) kits first:

Be Spring Already: Collection
Project: Live, Laugh, Love

Now, take a look at a few Commercial Use (CU) products Mommyish has in her store:

Oldies but Goodies
Back to School Bits

If you are interested in designing at all, you really need to check out Mommyish’s store! You really will be amazed, I promise!

I cheated a little bit here. My last designer is actually a set of wonderful designers! These are the designers behind Becky Higgins’ Project Life: Lori Whitlock, American Craft, Keri Bradford, Lili Niclass, Tiffani Smith, Liz Tamanaha, Heather Bailey, Nisa Fiin, Elise Joy Blaha Cripe, and Kimberly Church. I’m not going to share every single Project Life here but I did want to share three of may favorites, two of which I actually picked up at Michael’s the other day! The pictures are linked to the digital kits on AC Digitals but you can also find the paper versions on Amazon (Honey, Kraft, Midnight).

Honey Edition by Lori Whitlock
Project Life Kraft Edition by Tiffani Smith
Project Life Midnight Edition by Liz Tamanaha

I hope that you enjoyed this long comprehensive list of designers who’s products I love to work with! If there’s a designer who you’ve never heard of, why don’t you go check out their website or store! I shared just a small amount of what each of these designers have to offer! And as always…

New Release Thursday – June 20, 2013

It’s nice to see everyone again! Today is “New Release Thursday” and I have a few fun things to share with you today! I’ve got new releases from ChrissyW Digital and Scraps by Missy with layouts to show you and a small bit about a new release from M&M Designs! I also have a little something at the end to share so stick around!

First up are two releases from ChrissyW Digital, “Sample Pack 11” and “To The Left“. Both sets come in 12″x12″ and 8.5″x11” sizes and are on sale for 30% off through Sunday! This is a preview of “Sample Pack 11” and a layout I made with it:

“Disney Or Bust”
Template: Sample Pack 11 by ChrissyW Digital
Kit: “Are We There Yet” by Scraps by Missy (Releases 6/21)

To The Left by ChrissyW Digital

I haven’t made a layout with this set yet but if you check out her Facebook page or the product description, you will see plenty of wonderful inspiration there! I’m sure I will be using one of these in the near future though, I really like the one with all the circles!

Next up is “Are We There Yet” from Scraps by Missy. This kit actually releases tomorrow at Stuff To Scrap but here’s a look at it:

sbm_swty_preview
Are We There Yet by Scraps by Missy

Wait? Does that kit look familiar? Why yes, I used it on the layout above! Scroll back and check it out, I’ll wait… isn’t that an awesome kit? It worked perfectly to scrap my picture of the entrance to Disney’s Magic Kingdom. It was such a rainy day when we arrived, and it didn’t stop raining for three days! Try telling two little kids that they have to wait even longer to see Mickey Mouse, we almost had a mutiny on our hands!

The last release, “Paper Crazy V3” comes from M&M Designs. As usual, you get four templates in this set and it’s only $4! I don’t have a layout for this one either (since I’m on her Project Life team) but there are plenty of inspirational pictures up on her Facebook Page! Take a look:

Paper Crazy V3 by M&M Designs

M&M Designs also has “Project Life Journal Card V5” and “Paper Crazy V2” on sale for 50% off! That’s $2 a pack or $0.50 for each template, it’s a steal and it won’t last much longer!

That’s it for my digital new releases for today but if anyone’s still around, I wanted to share this “new release” picture with you:

My Project Life additions

I know this isn’t the best picture (inside, phone picture, etc) but I wanted to share some of the new Project Life Products I came home with yesterday! Want the run down of everything in the picture? What I picked up:

Project Life (check their website for where to order/stores)
Kraft Core
Honey Core
Kraft Album (blue/green)
Honey Album (multicolored chevron)
Big Variety Pack Photo Protectors
Grid 3×4 cards
Grid 4×6 cards

Thickers (from American Crafts)
Eric
Sparkling
Delight
Rainboots

K&Co Alpha (K&Company)
Handmade Doodle

Everything was picked up from my local Michael’s Craft Store (and of course coupons were used, they haven’t excluded Project Life… yet). These products aren’t even on their website yet! I have to admit, when I called them in the morning, the person I spoke with had no idea what Project Life was or if they had it in stock. So when I entered the store, I didn’t expect to find any products out yet… Lo and behold, I found this about five aisles down in the Scrapbooking section:

Project Life at my Michael’s Store

As you can see, they only have four core kits here right now (Honey, Midnight, Cinnamon, and Kraft) but I’m excited to be able to get my page protectors locally now! Anyway, I wanted to share my excitement with you! Keep watch here because I think some of the products I picked up will make an appearance here next Wednesday for “Project Life Wednesday”! I hope you enjoyed today’s post and as always…

Template Tuesday – June 18, 2013

Welcome to Template Tuesday! I’m going to showing you the “how-to” of  working with a “Quick-Page” today. If you don’t know, a “Quick-Page” or “QP” is a layout that is almost completely done and all you need to do is add your pictures, title and journaling. It’s a great way to get pictures in a layout if you’re short on time or worried that your skills aren’t that good, and let me tell you, they are probably better then you give yourself credit for!

Typically it is a .PNG file with one layer, the graphics are “flattened”, and the pictures go behind and peek though the photo spots. Some come with “photo spot” shapes to clip your pictures to, especially if there are many pictures close together. The one I’m sharing today is by ChrissyW Digital, from her “Spring At Last” kit. Here is what the quick page looks like “straight out of the box”:

Spring At Last – Quick Page Empty

The first thing that I added was my picture. Since this quick page only has one photo spot, a clipping shape isn’t needed. I re-sized and moved around my picture on the layer under this one until I was happy with the placement. At this point I had this:

Quick page with photo added

Next I decided to create my title with the “Spring At Last – button alpha“. I pulled the button letters that I needed, lined them up and re-sized them so they fit on the lines made by the paper strips. Then I took the button stitch and added the middle stitch to every-single-button… It was a little over the top to add all the stitches since the page looked fine without them but I wanted to add a little more because I had started with an almost complete page.

The one thing to remember: be aware of the direction of the shadows already on the page! If the elements you add have a shadow in another direction, the page won’t look right. Most people won’t pick up on what’s wrong at first but they will know something’s not right. The goal most of the time with digital pages is to “fool” the eye into thinking the digital page is “real”. Shadows are key to this! On this page, most of the elements are not bulky so it’s a little difficult to tell the shadow direction by the paper. As you can see looking at the bow over the picture, the “light” is coming from around the upper left corner. I tend to look at the bulkiest element first to find my shadow direction.

Quick page with title

The last step when using quick pages is to add your journaling and date. Sometimes a page doesn’t need journaling to tell the story, this picture was a bit generic so I added a little information about out “Meet and Greet” with the Disney Fairies. And that’s it! You’re done with your page! Take a look at the finished page:

“meet and greet” – Quick Page
Spring At Last QP1 by ChrissyW Digital
Spring At Last Alpha by ChrissyW Digital

Hopefully you try out some quick pages, they really are a great, quick way to get photos scrapped without being overwhelmed by papers, elements and alphas! The focus is on the pictures and the story! If you use this or another quick page, feel free to share it! I love seeing the wonderful pages you all can come up with! As always…

Friday Faves – June 14, 2013

Hey! You’re back in time for Friday Faves! This week I’m sharing (in no particular order) five of my current favorite templates. I know that I shared a template with you on Tuesday for Template Tuesday but that was mostly as a how-to of my creative process, today I’m focusing on the templates but I will show you a layout I made with each one to give you some ideas for using each template.

Now, you know I am on a few Creative Teams, there is one template here from a designer I CT for but I didn’t choose it to promote my designer (this time at least!), I chose it because, well, it would be one of my current favorites even if someone else had designed it! Lets jump right in!

I have a special space in my design spot for Sahlin Studio products. If you hadn’t noticed, many of the photos in my layouts are from Disney World. I just got back from a month trip there! Needless to say, I have a TON of photos to scrap! Sahlin Studios has a whole line devoted to Disney called “Project Mouse” that’s absolutely to-die-for! This template has nothing to do with that line other then it was created by the same designer, I just wanted to share…

Anyway, this template was a freebie from April off the Sahlin Studios’ blog (it’s still avalible today but I can’t guarantee how long it will be there). I like that this template continues off the page. It was a challenge sometimes to place pictures and elements because of this though. It challenged me a bit and I appreciate that! One thing that some people might find challenging is the lack of shadows on the template. Sometimes I enjoy having shadows already done but sometimes I end up changing all the shadows anyway so without any shadows, I can start fresh! Here is a picture of the template and the layout I made with it:

April 2013 Blog Freebie from Sahlin Studio

“Magical Mouse House”
Template: April 2013 Blog Freebie by Sahlin Studios
Kit: Various kits were used, all by Sahlin Studios

Next on my list is Template Revisited 11 by Scrapping with Liz. This template is all circles. I do squares, do you know how long it took me to complete this layout? Almost the entire month, I did a little bit here and there. I love how it turned out but it was certainly a challenge! I ended up choosing some beach photos, the Scrap Orchard iNSD Techno Geek kit and Down by the Shore by Scraps by Missy to complete this layout. I really like the uniqueness of having a template filled with circle layers! Here’s the template and the layout I ended up making with it:

“Beach Bum”
Template: Template Revisited 11 by Scrapping with Liz
Kit: iNSD TechnoGeek by Scrap Orchard Designers
Kit: Down by the Shore by Scraps By Missy

The third template that I want to share is from ChrissyW Digital’s Sample Pack 8. I originally created this as a CT layout but I’m sharing it because of what I did with the template. This template has a collection of squares, typically they would be used to clip paper and small photos to. I decided to go a different route and combine some of the square spaces to hold one larger picture. This put a creative spin on the layout and it came out looking great:

“Princess Birthday Kisses”
Template: Sample Pack 8 by ChrissyW Digital
Kit: Summer Meadow by ChrissyW Digital

This next template is very popular and very basic but it’s flexibility is what I love. This is Template A from Becky Higgins’ Project Life. I see this template used everywhere but what makes layouts made with this standout is how people adapt and change it to meet their layout needs. In this layout I combined card slots to place a larger picture while keeping the overall lines of the template. It’s an easy way to make a template your own. Take a look at the template and the changes I made to use it for my layout:

“Fort Wilderness”
Template: Template A by Becky Higgins Project Life
Kit: Various kits from Sahlin Studios

This last template is the new June freebie template from Angie Kovacs called Just Journal. I love the square collage area in the center. I think I gravitated toward this template because of it’s funky yet simple feel. I really enjoy templates with clean lines and open space. This template has both of those qualities, I was even able to use a paper that had a large graphic and it actually shows in the layout, I sometimes find that hard to accomplish with the other templates I use. I used Polka Dot Pixels kit “School Day” with a photo from our Disney World trip last month. Even though I took a lot of pictures, I’m glad there’s a large variety, there always seems to be a picture to use with whatever kit I choose! This template and kit go so well together:

I hope you enjoyed the selection of templates and some ideas on how to use them. Just remember, a template is a starting point, don’t forget you can change them up to suit your needs! If you use any of these templates, leave me a link so that I can see what you created!

New Release Thursday – June 13, 2013

Welcome back, it’s New Release Thursday! Today there are releases from ChrissyW Digital and Polka Dot Pixels that I want to share. In this post, the photos are linked to the products in TheDigiChick shop. First up are two sets of  4×12 Paper Cutter Strips from ChrissyW Digital:

4×12 Paper Cutter Strips/Mask – Set 1

I used the square strip mask and clipped 48 photos onto it! I wouldn’t have used any of them as “feature” photos but I liked the action shots. This way I can incorporate them in a fun way! Each small square will end up being about an inch square when this page is printed out in 12”x12” size, I think that’s a perfect size to show a little action to compliment the large black and white “feature” picture!

“Summer Fun”
Template: Paper Cutters – Tiles (freebie) by ChrissyW Digital
Papers: Cardstock Solids – Set #2 by ChrissyW Digital
Elements: Oh Boy by Scraps by Missy

4×12 Paper Cutter Strips/Masks – Set 2

In this layout, I used the cloud strip as an overlay on the blue polka dot paper. I used two layers of the cutter strip. The bottom layer I used a pastel effect to give the clouds a light blue and shaded look. On the top cloud layer I used a glass effect to give the look of dimension, almost like a dimensional sticker you find for paper scrapbook pages. It really adds character to the layout!

“Playtime”

Kit: Down by the Shore by Scraps by Missy

The other new release I’d like to share is a kit by Polka Dot Pixels called “Classified”. It’s school themed which makes it perfect for end of the school year pictures! I love the vintage look of this kit, it really makes my layout feel special, take a look:

Classified by Polka Dot Pixels

I don’t have any “traditional school” pictures but I used some from a project we did to learn about rainbows.

“Love to Learn”

I hope you like using these templates and kit as much as I do! Leave me a link if you use them,  I’d love to see what you make too!
